The root chakra — known as Muladhara in Sanskrit — is the foundation of your entire energy system. Located at the base of the spine, this first chakra governs your sense of safety, stability, and connection to the physical world. When your root chakra is balanced, you feel grounded, secure, and confident in your ability to meet life's challenges. When it's blocked or overactive, you may experience chronic anxiety, financial worry, fatigue, or a persistent feeling of being unmoored.
The good news is that balancing your root chakra doesn't require years of training or complicated rituals. With consistent, intentional practice, you can restore stability to this vital energy centre and feel the difference in your daily life. Below, we share six powerful and accessible ways to bring your Muladhara back into alignment — techniques we recommend regularly at our North Vancouver healing space.

What Is the Root Chakra?
The root chakra is the first of seven major energy centres in the body. Its Sanskrit name, Muladhara, translates to "root support." Associated with the colour red and the element of earth, this chakra connects you to your physical body, your sense of belonging, and your basic survival needs. It sits at the base of the spine and radiates energy downward through your legs and feet into the ground beneath you.
When the root chakra is open and flowing, you feel emotionally steady, financially secure, and physically vital. A balanced Muladhara allows you to trust life, take practical action, and remain present rather than spiralling into fear or worry.
Signs Your Root Chakra May Be Out of Balance
An imbalanced root chakra can manifest in both physical and emotional symptoms. If you notice several of the following patterns, your Muladhara may need attention:
- Chronic anxiety or fear — especially around money, housing, or personal safety
- Feeling disconnected — from your body, your community, or the natural world
- Fatigue and low motivation — difficulty getting started or following through
- Lower back or leg pain — physical tension in the areas the root chakra governs
- Restlessness or inability to focus — a scattered, "floating" quality to your thoughts
- Over-attachment to material things — hoarding, excessive spending, or obsessive control
- Red Jasper — a nurturing stone that promotes emotional stability, courage, and endurance. Hold it during meditation or carry it in your pocket throughout the day.
- Black Tourmaline — a powerful protective crystal that absorbs negative energy and creates a sense of safety. Place it near your front door or at the corners of your bed.
- Smoky Quartz — a gentle grounding stone that dissolves fear and lifts emotional heaviness. It's especially helpful during times of transition or uncertainty.
